Aqua Vista Pull Down Spray Kitchen Faucet

A new kitchen faucet is a quick and easy way to upgrade your space and make it more functional. And it's not hard to install on your own, according to Molly Machmer-Wessels, a co-owner and designer at Woodland Design Company, a business that builds custom spaces in homes. "You need to pick the right kind of faucet for your kitchen and follow the steps carefully, but if you know what to do, you're looking at a fairly straightforward do-it-yourself project," she says.

Ready to get to work? Read on for Machmer-Wessels's step-by-step guide to accomplishing the job.

Pick the right faucet

Consider your kitchen's configuration: If the countertops are staying as is, you'll need to pick an option based on the existing hole configuration. Some faucets are single-hole, while others range from two to four holes.

Once you've narrowed down the parameters, you can begin your search. Think about how you use your kitchen, says Machmer-Wessels. Do you cook often, for example? If so, extras such as a smart-touch faucet or a sprayer for cleaning the sink after prep will likely be useful.

Next, choose the design aesthetic that best suits the space and your style. You can follow the lead of the existing hardware or opt for a new look. Looking at shape, modern silhouettes versus traditional lines, and scale are all important. Let the existing room and home guide the feel, but keep in mind that a faucet can be a design moment. Choosing something unique and sculptural can make an impact.

Organize before installing

Remove everything under your sink, and set up an area next to it with the tools and parts you'll be using all laid out. Keeping everything organized and having it handy will make the process much more seamless.

The tools you need vary depending upon the manufacturer and faucet style, but a set of wrenches and a screwdriver are almost always necessary.

Shut off the valves, remove the supply lines, and leave them to sit for an hour or so with a paper towel underneath them in case they're leaking. It's not uncommon to discover that they have a slow drip you never knew about because they were always connected to the supplies. If they are leaking, you'll need to buy new ones.

Since you'll be working on your back, a pillow to lie on will be more comfortable than lying on the bare floor. Safety glasses to protect your eyes from falling debris are also a good idea.

Although it's not necessary, it is easier to install the faucet with a helper, who can hold it straight and level and keep it from spinning while you're wrenching it into place.

Time to install

1. Remove the old faucet and turn off the water supply: Use a wrench to disconnect the supply lines, then disconnect them from the faucet itself. Remove the mounting nuts that connect the faucet to the sink and take out the faucet.

2. Check the existing holes and clean up as necessary.

3. Install the new faucet by inserting it through the mounting holes.

4. This is where the helper comes in, if you have one: Ensure that your faucet is in the proper position while you tighten it down. Reattach water supply lines to match the corresponding hot and cold supplies.

Beware: Do not kink the lines. If you need to shorten, just curl, but do not kink. Attach the lines by hand, and then tighten down with the wrench.

5. Turn on the water and check for leaks. Tighten the connections if you need to.

6. Let the water run for a few minutes to eliminate any air or debris that could be in the lines.

VoilĂ ! Congratulations on your beautiful new kitchen faucet.
