Facilities at UND

The Department of Music, housed in the North wing of the Edmond A. Hughes Fine Arts Center, has complete and modern facilities for advanced education in music.

Major instructional features of the music wing include individual practice rooms, rehearsal halls designed specifically for choral, instrumental, and percussion ensembles, smart classrooms, as well as a computer lab and a keyboard lab.

The performance venues range from intimate performance spaces that seat around a hundred to the Chester Frits Auditorium that seats over 2,300.

Chester Fritz Auditorium

The Chester Fritz Auditorium, located near the Hughes Fine Arts Center, houses 2,300 seats in one of the finest and most unique buildings in the state and the surrounding area. All types of live entertainment from professional music groups, dance companies, and theater groups to local folk artist and singing groups perform on its stage. UND Music regularly performs there for band and choral concerts, the annual Winter wUNDerland holiday concert, as well as for the Honor Festivals and other performances throughout the year.

Empire Arts Center

The Empire Arts Center is a non-profit, multi-purpose facility located in downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. Renovated in 1998, the Empire is a circa 1919 movie house renovated into a multi-use 400 seat theatre and gallery facility. The Empire Arts Center hosts a variety of theatre productions, performing arts events, films, concerts, speakers, and community events throughout the year. The Empire is also home of the UND art gallery.

Hopper-Danley Memorial Chapel

The Hopper-Danley Memorial Chapel was a gift from the late Roy and Elnora (Hopper) Danley. It is located on the banks of the English Coulee, adjacent to the Adelphi Fountain and the Hughes Fine Arts Center. It seats 140 people, and houses a baby grand piano for an intimate recital setting.

Josephine Campbell Recital Hall

The Josephine Campbell Recital Hall is a 200-seat performance space housed within the Hughes Fine Arts Center. It features an acoustically tuned amphitheater design surrounding a generous stage space with a 9-foot Imperial Bösendorfer Concert Grand piano. The recital hall is also set up to double as a lecture hall, and houses professional sound and lighting systems, making it a highly desirable space for many recitals and concerts throughout the year.

Gordon Erickson Music Library

The Gordon Erickson Music Library, located in the center of Hughes Fine Arts Center, is the most extensive music library in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

The Music Library has over 15,000 audio recordings representing music of all styles and periods. The library also has a comprehensive collection of sheet music, pedagogical, and musicological resources, including a wide selection of orchestral and operatic scores.

A generous endowment from the estate of the late Edna Ullyot of Langdon has provided for the continued development and expansion of the score and recording holdings of the Music Library.

Rehersal Spaces

Choral Rehearsal Room (HFAC 158)

The University of North Dakota Choral Rehearsal room is a large rehearsal space capable of hold approximately 200 singers. The University of North Dakota choirs, some academic classes, and community groups such as the Grand Forks Master Chorale and the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras regularly use the choir room. For special events within the music department, the choir room is available as well.

Instrumental Rehearsal Room (HFAC 128)

The University of North Dakota Instrumental Rehearsal room is the second largest space in the music department, and is home to Wind Ensemble, University Band, both Jazz Bands, Marching Band, the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras, and the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra. The band room is available for special events within the music department.

Percussion Rehearsal Room (HFAC 148)

The University of North Dakota Percussion Rehearsal room is the home to the University Steel Pan Ensemble and Percussion Ensembles. It features its own practice room large enough to hold a 5.5 octave Marimba.

Educational Spaces

Smart Classrooms

All of the classrooms in the Hughes Fine Arts Center are outfitted with computer, sound and video equipment.

Piano Lab

The Piano Lab in the Hughes Fine Arts Center is a state of the art keyboard piano laboratory with 15 Clavinova digital pianos. This lab is used for class piano lessons, which are available to non-majors.

Computer Lab

The computer lab in the Hughes Fine Arts Center has 20 macintosh laptops as well as several iMac desktop computers with Finale/Sibelius software, hooked into midi keyboards so that students can learn the latest in music technology.
